Life and death are inextricably connected to one another; there cannot be life without death, nor death without life. There must first exist a life in order for it to be ended in death, and the first law of thermodynamics reminds us that indeed there cannot be new life without death first. This work is a sculptural exploration into the interconnections between the two seemingly dichotomous states, through the use of weathered limestone and wood ash. Ideas are interrogated through materiality and symbolism.
The latin adage Memento mori (remember that you will die) and the inverse Memento vivere (remember to live) have been written in stone – and then left outdoors to weather and slowly become illegible. The undeniable facts, that we will live and we will die, are suddenly blurred as the distinctions between the two are lost. Both statements are equally important, and equally unimportant.
Ash as a medium is linked to both destruction and regeneration, holding ideas of death alongside new life. Using water, wood ash has been sculpted into spheres in order to create dialogue on cyclical and eternal systems.
The endless motion of life and death in conjunction with each other are presented as a connected system that, in turn, connects each and every being.
